God of Joy and Pain

Lately, I’ve been pretty emotional—this isn’t how I imagined my junior year would end. I can’t even begin to fathom how my friends who just graduated feel. There has been so much loss, frustration, fear, sadness, and confusion within this crazy pandemic.

I know that I’ve felt all of the emotions above (and many more) because of our current situation. The worst part? When my emotions are invalidated, when someone tells me that I’m not allowed to feel the way I feel. It hurts, especially because emotions are usually a byproduct of a situation, so I don’t always have a lot of control.

But you know something that doesn’t change based on your current situation? God. He stays the same. Not only that, but our God is also a God of emotion. He understands our feelings because He has walked this earth AND watches it from above!

He is a God who understands and has felt...

  • Love (Jeremiah 31:1, John 3:16)

  • Compassion (Psalm 103:13, Psalm 78:38-39)

  • Anger (Ezekiel 25:17, Isaiah 26:21)

  • Sadness (Genesis 6:6, Psalm 78:40)

  • Joy (Zephaniah 3:17, Psalm 149:4)

...and so many more.

What does that mean for you? It means He wants us to feel, He encourages us to feel, He created us to feel. Your emotions are validated and understood by the God of the whole entire universe!

So when you don’t understand your situation or your emotions, it’s okay! You can find rest in this truth: even when you don’t understand yourself, God understands you and loves you dearly.
