Time to Pray

Have any of you noticed that because of the quarantine, we actually have time to think? It seems odd because most of us are used to running at 110% without taking time to reflect on our lives. We have time!! Finally!
But then I realized, I don’t like having time to think. Anyone else?
It’s stressful! Especially as a high schooler. So instead of rejoicing with the gift of time, I did everything I could to fill it. And technology is a great way to waste time. When watching episode after episode of a show or falling into a YouTube pit, we attempt to fill our free minutes with action and distraction.
But what should we be doing with this extra time? The world will tell you to think about college, friends, appearances, sports, arts, grades, tests, relationships, and food. Do you hear the little voice in your head telling you to figure everything out or worry about the future? I certainly have. It whispers, “Are you using your time wisely? Are you using this time to ponder your interests or passions?” It tells you that you have to be productive otherwise this extra time is wasted.
Don’t listen to that voice.
Don’t get me wrong! It’s good to think about the future and make plans. Getting off of our couches and taking a walk, reading a book, painting, spending time with family, building something, and writing are all great activities to foster productivity. But they aren’t completely satisfying.
So I have another task for you today. Instead of reaching for your phone or attempting to find some activity to use up all of your time, follow this command. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” When your mind wants to stress or block out the rest of the world, pray. When you feel lonely and isolated, rejoice, for God has blessed you with time to spend with him. When you have lost everything or just had a bad day, give thanks. God has given this time to us as a gift in a very odd package. Open it and smile. He is still with you when the world falls away and he answers prayers amidst the silence we fear. God Bless, and I have you all in my prayers!
